'Anonymous' Star Rhys Ifans On Playing the man Behind Shakespeare's Works
Several areas of this week's era "Anonymous" are unforeseen. Within the questionable plot to Roland Emmerich staying away from large-budget action to see an account about Shakespeare, a variety of it will surprise audiences, but most likely probably the most interesting options created through the designers in the film was the actor inside the lead role, Rhys Ifans. Known in the usa for his smaller sized, oddball roles like Xenophilius Lovegood in "Harry Potter as well as the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" to ensure that as Curt Connors in "The Astounding Spider-Guy," Ifans may not appear like the natural fit for your role in the Earl of Oxford, then when the actor sitting lower with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, he discussed his find it hard to secure charge in "Anonymous." Ifans mentioned that step one was meeting director Roland Emmerich in your home london and reacting for an problem. "Someone said the script, which he asked for me which role would I kind of be thinking about. I told him, 'If I guess you are kind of a regular director, you'd offer me negligence Shakespeare—which Rafe Spall plays perfectly and fantastically—but for anyone who is a brave and courageous director you'd maybe consider me for negligence an British aristocrat who written the whole works of Shakespeare.'" The 15 Worst Movie Mistakes in History
The combined budget for 'Titanic,' 'Matrix Reloaded' and 'Ocean's 11' comes to almost half-billion dollars. Unfortunately, no matter how much money you throw at a film, there's bound to be a few mistakes. Sometimes production members accidentally appear on screen or objects that weren't in one shot randomly show up in the next. You'd think these moments would eventually get sorted out in an editing suite during post-production, but that doesn't always happen. Which means two things if you're the filmmaker: the error gets plastered on screens across the country, and you end up with a Moviefone post titled the 15 Worst Mistakes Ever Made. REVIEW: The Three Musketeers is a Tedious, Incoherent Drag
If Sherlock Holmes could be successfully steampunked into a rakish action hero, there’s no reason The Three Musketeers couldn’t be gearpunked into some tolerable 17th century equivalent — and Athos, Porthos, Aramis and young D’Artagnan are actually soldiers, so no serious character tweaking is required to send them off into repeated swashbuckling setpieces. It’s not the addition of airships and male dangly earrings that make Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on Alexandre Dumas’ classic, much-adapted adventure such a drag, it’s everything else — the incoherence, the anvil-heavy dialogue, the lack of anything beyond the broadest of characterizations. Even the action sequences, which are Anderson’s primary selling point as a director, have a weightless, Wacky Races quality to them — no one who’s not an extra ever really seems in danger of getting hurt. The musketeers and their various enemies bounce through blimp battles, cannon fire and giant swordfights, and at worst their brocade outfits get a little dusty. With the stakes so low, why not just skip to the end, when there are guaranteed to be the most explosions and you’ll get to see who wins, before the inevitable sequel setup? This latest incarnation of The Three Musketeers has some promising casting: It’s always a pleasure to see Christoph Waltz, even in the silly role of the scheming Cardinal Richelieu. And Mads Mikkelsen shows up for a few scenes and a duel as Rochefort, the head of Richelieu’s guard and a man with an unfortunate tendency to stop to talk instead of just killing someone. Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans are all fine as Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and Orlando Bloom has some fun channeling Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow as the vampy, eviled-up Duke of Buckingham. Unfortunately, it’s Logan Lerman’s D’Artagnan and Milla Jovovich’s Milady de Winter who get the largest portions of screen time, and both are like nails on a chalkboard. Lerman, the teenage star of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, makes the introduction of Shia LaBeouf as Mutt Williams in the Indiana Jones saga look like a masterpiece of charm and charisma. His D’Artagnan is a smirky, preening brat who, thanks to how his introduction is compressed, seems to do nothing but challenge people to duels for the first half of the story. Jovovich, Anderson’s wife and muse, has proven herself capable of being a perfectly viable action heroine, but she’s at a loss here playing a character who’s been reworked from ruthless spy to double agent with no clear motivation other than wreaking havoc, and a soft spot for love that’s counter to Dumas’ branded woman’s tendency to use, discard and/or murder her lovers. It’s amusing that she’s given a swordfight scene in a full corseted gown with panniers, but it remains a ridiculous update of a formidable antagonist that turns her into a simpering dolly. Putting a weapon in the hand of a female character isn’t a guaranteed way of making the role stronger — Jovovich breaking into a highly guarded area in what appears to be her action lingerie shows her character to be capable, sure, but primarily there for decorative purposes. The Three Musketeers keeps the basic framework of Dumas’ story, with a few major tweaks. Most notably, the secret affair between Queen Anne (Juno Temple) and Buckingham, the exposure of which could trigger a war between France and England, has inexplicably been turned into a scheme concocted by Richelieu. In the film, Anne only has eyes for her awkward but adoring husband King Louis XIII (Freddie Fox), and her entanglement with the Duke is entirely the Cardinal’s invention. Presumably an infidelity storyline would not be PG-13 appropriate, though the arranged dynastic marriage of teenagers is totally fine. D’Artagnan’s love interest Constance (Gabriella Wilde) has similarly been sheared of her inconvenient husband and untimely end, and here is just a lady-in-waiting who D’Artagnan first tries, unsuccessfully, to woo while simultaneously fighting off dozens of swordsmen. The film leaps numbingly from action sequence to action sequence, none distinguished enough to leave a mark, even the addition of an introductory segment involving the musketeers breaking into Da Vinci’s vault, which is apparently hidden under a canal in Venice, in order to steal one of his plans. By the time a dirigible is impaled on Notre Dame’s spire, it may begin to occur to you that most of the goings-on in this film could probably have been averted by the royal couple just sitting down and having a conversation, especially if they really are the nice, in-love kids they’ve been made out to be. That would leave more time for Athos, Porthos and Aramis to drink, bitch about how time has passed them by and try on new jackets, which are the true highlights of this otherwise tedious affair. If D’Artagnan was sent out for takeout, that might keep him off screen until the credits — unless, that is, they somehow get a greenlight for a follow-up.

OK start for ABC's 'Man Up'
A special off-night edition of ''The X Factor'' kept Fox on top of Tuesday among young adults, while the CBS drama lineup prevailed in its target demo. ABC's Tim Allen comedy ''Last Man Standing'' had a good second-week showing, and the new show behind it, ''Man Up,'' did OK in its debut. According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, ''The X Factor'' averaged a 3.8 rating/10 share and 10.1 million viewers overall , down from its season average but better than both of its airings last week in a frame that was disrupted by baseball. Fox led its two-hour block in adults 18-49 and also topped the three-hour averages of ABC, CBS and NBC. The presence of ''X Factor'' had an effect on the reality shows opposite it, as both NBC's two-hour ''The Biggest Loser'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall) and ABC's 9 p.m. ''Dancing With the Stars'' results show (2.6/6 in 18-49, 13.5 million viewers overall) down week to week. At ABC, ''Last Man Standing'' (3.0/9 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) retained nearly 90% of its 18-49 score in the 8 o'clock half-hour last week and again provided nice time-period improvements, placing third in its half-hour among 18-49ers. It was followed by the debut of ''Man Up'' (2.4/6 in 18-49, 7.8 million viewers overall), which did OK though a network usually likes to see better retention for a new 8:30 half-hour due to rising television usage at that time; it was up slightly over ABC's performance at 8:30 on the same night a year ago. CBS, the night's leader in 25-54 and total viewers, ruled Tuesday's opening hour with ''NCIS'' (3.8/10 in 18-49, 19.0 million viewers overall), which tied ''X Factor'' as the night's No. 1 show in 18-49 while standing alone as the top draw in both adults 25-54 (4.7/10) and total viewers. While the original was down slightly week to week, 9 p.m. spinoff ''NCIS: Los Angeles'' held steady (3.3/8 in 18-49, 15.3 million viewers overall), placing second in 18-49, tying ''X Factor'' in 25-54 (4.7/10) and winning in total viewers. At 10 p.m., CBS rookie ''Unforgettable'' (2.5/6 in 18-49, 11.9 million viewers overall) showed its first week-to-week gains in 18-49 and got closer to the delivery of ''The Good Wife'' in the timeslot last year. It won the hour over NBC's ''Parenthood'' (2.0/5 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall), which matched last week's score, and ''Body of Proof'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall), which was also in line with its most recent episode. Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 3.8/10; CBS, 3.2/8; ABC, 2.4/6; NBC, 1.9/5; Univision, 1.5/4; CW, 0.8/2. In total viewers: CBS, 15.4 million; ABC, 10.7 million; Fox, 10.1 million; NBC, 5.1 million; Univision, 3.3 million; CW, 1.6 million. Contact Rick Kissell at rick.kissell@variety.com

Newcomers try to get 'Real' at B.O.
'Footloose''The Thing''The Big Year'Paramount's "Footloose" remake may not be able to dance away with the weekend's domestic B.O. crown despite positive word of mouth from advanced screenings. Holdover "Real Steel" and sci-fi horror prequel "The Thing" will also vie for the top spot. "Footloose," which launches today at 3,549 Stateside locations, is likely to bow at around $15 million, according to pre-weekend tracking services. That doesn't leave much wiggle room for the dance pic, since DreamWorks' "Real Steel" is likely to drop some 45%-50% in its second outing, which would put it with- in hailing distance of "Footloose.""Footloose." Universal's "The Thing" prequel is in the mix as well, though the studio has slightly more modest expectations for an opening in the low double-digits. Twentieth Century Fox's adult-skewed bird-watching comedy "The Big Year" will struggle to take flight, B.O. observers say, with dismal prospects in the $3 million-$5 million range. Overseas, "Real Steel" should hold on to its No. 1 position, expanding to markets like South Korea and the U.K. Last weekend, the film bowed with $22.6 million, more than enough to knock "The Smurfs" from its eight-week roost atop the international box office. Domestically, the weekend will take a sizable hit vs. last year, when "Jackass 3D" scored the highest opening ever in October with $50 million. That's considered a B.O. anomaly, so most bizzers are focusing on last weekend as a better comparison. In an effort to build word of mouth (and boosted by enthusiastic test screenings), Par hosted free nationwide sneaks of "Footloose" on Sept. 30, as well as screenings for cheerleading camps and youth groups. Par said the advanced screenings were effective in reinforcing interest among the pic's core demos, mainly teenage girls and women between 30 and 40. But there hasn't been much movement among male auds, meaning "Footloose" still is primarily a dual-quadrant pic. The original "Footloose" became a B.O. sensation in 1984, cuming almost $80 million -- nearly 10 times its opening-weekend gross. Par's remake cost a modest $24 million, with OK overseas prospects to keep the mood light. The film bowed day-and-date with $1.2 million from Australia and New Zealand. Pic expands this weekend to an additional five markets, including the U.K., with major territories such as France, Brazil and Russia set to follow over the next few months. Universal is distribbing "The Thing" overseas for Morgan Creek, which had international rights to the film. "The Thing" -- a prequel to John Carpenter's original 1982 film -- launches this weekend in Oz, France and Taiwan. Domestically, there's a lot riding on the film's opening perf, especially since Par launches "Paranormal Activity 3" next weekend. It's not certain whether auds will embrace both pics in the weeks leading up to Halloween. The holiday itself typically isn't a big moviegoing weekend, though Halloween this year falls on a Monday. For comparison purposes, Universal points to Screen Gems' "The Stepfather," which bowed this same weekend in 2009 with $11.6 million and cumed only $29.1 million domestically. Fox's "The Big Year," budgeted at a reported $28 million, could be a tough sell for the studio: The film follows three avid bird-watchers who compete to spot the rarest birds in North America. Stars Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin will attract some filmgoers, though the primarily adult aud could be deterred by tepid reviews. In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics bows Pedro Almodovar's "The Skin I Live In" at six locations in NY and L.A. Also this weekend, Millennium Films' Nicole Kidman-Nicolas Cage thriller "Trespass" launches at 10 Stateside engagements, while Anchor Bay's "Texas Killing Fields," starring Sam Worthington and Jessica Chastain, opens at three. I Am a Good Person/I Am a Bad Person
A Punk Films presentation. Produced, directed, written by Ingrid Veninger. With: Ingrid Veninger, Hallie Switzer, Simon Reynolds.Taking the "personal film" to an extreme, Canadian auteur Ingrid Veninger's "I Am a Good Person/I Am a Bad Person" is so sketchily drawn and obscure, it may be only the helmer herself who knows exactly what's up, leaving even sympathetic observers out in the emotional cold. Veninger's microbudget third feature will have difficulty mustering even minimal returns, given its anemic narrative and offhanded regard for its audience. Acclaimed for her second feature, "Modra," Veninger used the European tour of that film as a backdrop for this follow-up, in which a filmmaker named Ruby White (Veninger) brings her unsuccessful movie before unresponsive festival audiences, painfully discovering what it was that drove her to make the movie in the first place. A brittle and alienating personality (which doesn't make the film any more appealing), Ruby eventually drives her pregnant 18-year-old daughter, Sara (Veninger's daughter, Halle Switzer), to split with her in Berlin. Sara continues on to Paris to figure out what to do about her baby. The outcome is predictable, the process too spare to earn much affection.Camera (color, HD), Benjamin Lichty; editor, Chris Wiseman; costume designer, Hallie Switzer.
