'Melancholia' Wins Best Film at European Film Awards

BERLIN -- Lars von Trier's apocalyptic drama "Melancholia" blew them away at the 24th European Film Awards, Europe's version of the Oscars, taking home three trophies, including best film."I don't have a message from Lars for you because he has stopped making public statements. I can't imagine why," said one of "Melancholia's" producers as she accepted the honor on von Trier's behalf, making reference to the director's infamous pro-Hitler quips in Cannes this year."Melancholia's" cameraman Manuel Alberto Claro got the best cinematography nod for his hypnotic lensing of earth's final days and production designer Jette Lehmann won the EFA for her opulent sets."Melancholia" was the odds-on favorite to take the top prize at this year's EFA's. The host of the 24th European Film Awards, German comedienne Anke Engelke, acknowledged the film's frontrunner status when she started the show, making her entrance on stage in a wedding dress walking in slow-mo, aping Dunst's character in the von Trier drama. But Von Trier was beat out in the best director race by fellow Dane Susanne Bier for her Foreign Language Oscar winner "In a Better World." And the European Film Academy preferred Tilda Swinton's gripping performance as the mother of a murderer in "We Need to Talk About Kevin" to Kirsten Dunst's depressed bride in "Melancholia," giving Swinton the best actress nod. Colin Firth added an EFA best actor trophy to his Oscar with what will likely be his last honor for "The King's Speech." Neither Firth nor Swinton made it to the EFA ceremony, which was somewhat low-wattage in terms of star power."The King's Speech's" award haul also included the best editing honor for Tariq Anwar and the People's Choice Award voted on by European cinema goers.Oscar favorite "The Artist" won one EFA for best composer nod for Ludovic Bource's classic score. Bource singled out the film's canine star for "inspiring all the music" in Michel Hazanavicius' film.Another strong Oscar contender, the 3D dance film "Pina" from Wim Wenders won best European documentary.Belgium brothers Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne took the best screenplay honor for their script to "The Kid with a Bike." Belgium's other big win of the night was for Oxygen, from first-timer Hans Van Nuffel, won the European Discovery prize for best debut feature. In one of the biggest surprises of the evening, French acting legend Michel Piccoli, who was nominated in the best actor category for playing the Pope in "Habemus Papam," was hauled on stage to recieve a lifetime achievement award from actor Bruno Ganz and director Volker Schlondorff. But the biggest laughs of the evening came thanks to Stellan Skarsgard and his tribute to Mads Mikkelsen, winner of the award for achievement in European cinema. Skarsgard turned the speech about his old friend into a mini-roast."I don't admire you for your looks, because you're not good looking," Skarsgard riffed. "You have an 'interesting' face. I know you've been voted sexiest man in Denmark like 6 times but those are by people who don't know you. And we have to remember, Denmark is a very small place."But Skarsgard ended on a sweet note. "Mads, everything you do has a clarity to it. There's nothing fuzzy about what you do. You're acting is clean, graceful and very poetic."The biggest applause of the night was for veteran British director Stephen Frears, who received a lifetime achivement honor."Actually, I'm everything you don't," Frears said to the audience of European film professionals. "I'm not an auteur and I make cheerful films because I can't stand the misery anymore. I'm just a bloke who makes films and hopes the audience likes them. And I'll try to do better next time." The companyclaims that it closed a deal in late October to create a Hunger Games-branded version of its "China Glaze"nail polish, as well as contribute to the promotional campaignfor the adaptation of the popular Suzanne Collins novelthat Lionsgate is hoping will be a mega-blockbuster movie series similar to Twilight. But shortly after Lionsgate executives signed the contract, according to the complaint, the studio made statements to the press that the deal was "not happening," and askedAmerican to say that the parties "were merely 'discussing' a 'possible' promotional deal." American says it refused to lie, prompting a Lionsgate attorney to send an email on Nov. 17 saying that the studiowas "terminating" the contract. "However, the contract does not permitLionsgate to unilaterally terminate,"argues the complaint, a copy of which was obtained by THR. "Lionsgate attempted to justify its actions by claiming that American had supposedly 'leaked' information about the contract to the press. The claim was and is completely untrue--American did not 'leak' any information, and so informed Lionsgate immediately." FEINBERG'S 5: Billy Crystal, AFI Fest, 'The Iron Lady,' 'Margin Call,' Morgan Freeman

Kevin Winter/Getty Images These, in my judgment, are the five awards-related stories from the past week that every self-respecting movie buff should know about...our editor recommendsBilly Crystal to Host the OscarsMeryl Streep Movie 'The Iron Lady' to Open Dec. 30Roadside Celebrates 'Albert Nobbs,' Prepares to Mount Late Campaign for 'Margin Call'Morgan Freeman to Receive Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement at Golden GlobesSteven Spielberg's 'The Adventures of Tintin' Gets North American Premiere as 25th AFI Fest Closes 1. The Academy Makes the Best of It It was a rollercoaster of a week for the Academy. As THR was the first to report, Brett Ratner, who had been named the producer of February's Oscar show, resigned from the job on Tuesday after provoking a firestorm of controversy by stating during a Q&A that "rehearsal is for fags" and explicitly discussing his sex life with Howard Stern. Then, on Wednesday, Eddie Murphy, whom Ratner recently directed in Tower Heist and recruited to serve as the host of the Oscar show, also walked away from the show, leaving things in disarray. But that same day, Brian Grazer, the co-chief of Imagine Entertainment and the Oscar-winning producer of A Beautiful Mind (2001), stepped up to the plate and agreed to replace Ratner, and, on Thursday, Billy Crystal, the popular host of eight previous Oscar shows, agreed to come back and fill in for Murphy. (As a publicist friend said to me, it's a pretty safe bet that Crystal's opening monologue will begin, "Good evening and welcome to the Oscars. I'm your host, Eddie Murphy!") PHOTOS: Oscar Hosts Through the Years Despite the inconvenience and stress that the last week must have caused the Academy, they actually came out of it in pretty good shape; after all, does anyone doubt that they'd have preferred a Grazer/Crystal combo over Ratner/Murphy in the first place? Now, the Academy can devote its full focus to Saturday's third annual Governors Awards ceremony, at which actress/producer Oprah Winfrey will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and honorary Oscars will be presented to actor James Earl Jones (in absentia -- he didn't want to miss a night of his West End play Driving Miss Daisy) and makeup artist Dick Smith. (Click here to read my preview of the event and interviews with all three honorees.) 2. AFI Fest Closes Out Fall Festival Season The fall festival season drew to a close with the 25th annual AFI Fest, a week-long festival that was held in Hollywood (primarily at Grauman's Chinese and Egyptian theaters) and was bookended by two highly-anticipated films. The opening night screening was the world premiere of Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar and the closing night screening was the North American premiere of Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin, both of which generated mixed-leaning-positive responses from critics. PHOTOS: 'J. Edgar' Kicks Off AFI Fest In-between, many other awards hopefuls that have been playing on the festival circuit for months were also screened, including contenders for the big eight categories (Michel Hazanavicius's The Artist, Steve McQueen's Shame, Roman Polanski's Carnage, Luc Besson's The Lady, Ralph Fiennes's Coriolanus, Lynne Ramsey's We Need to Talk About Kevin, Oren Moverman's Rampart, Simon Curtis's My Week with Marilyn, Lars von Trier's Melancholia), foreign language category (Wim Wenders's Pina, Asghar Farhadi's A Separation, Bela Tarr's The Turin Horse), and doc category (Werner Herzog's Into the Abyss). Be sure to check out my recent interviews with Coriolanus's director/star Fiennes (click here) and The Lady's star Michelle Yeoh (click here). 3. Iron Lady to December 30 The Weinstein Company has decided to push back the release date of Phyllida Lloyd's Margaret Thatcher bio-pic The Iron Lady -- which stars Meryl Streep in the title role -- from December 16 to December 30. This move, along with the fact that a trailer for the film has yet to be released, has stirred up doubts about whether the film will provide to be the awards contender that many expected it might be. Indeed, this film will test whether Lloyd will bring her game up to Streep's historic level (Streep seems to get nominated every time she appears in a film), or Streep will bring hers down to Lloyd's (Lloyd is best known for the 2008 big screen adaptation of Mamma Mia!). Either way, Harvey Weinstein will have a stake in the best actress Oscar race: he's also distributing My Week with Marilyn, which features an awards-caliber portrayal of Marilyn Monroe by Michelle Williams, who has been nominated twice in the past. 4. Margin Call Surprises Roadside Attractions has decided to mount a late but aggressive campaign on behalf of the timely Wall Street drama Margin Call, which was written and directed by first-time filmmaker J.C. Chandor and features an incredible ensemble cast led by Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Paul Bettany, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, Demi Moore, and Mary McDonnell. The film, which was released concurrently in select theaters and on VOD on October 21, quickly generated enthusiastic support from critics and phenomenal numbers on VOD, convincing the little studio -- which has previously guided The Cove (2009), Biutiful (2010), and Winter's Bone (2010) to Oscar success -- that they have a second contender on their hands to go along with Albert Nobbs, for which they hope to score a best actress nod for Glenn Close and a best supporting actress nod for Janet McTeer. Margin Call, which one publicist described as "The Help for men," received a best ensemble Gotham Awards nod earlier this month, and seems to have a strong shot a best ensemble SAG nod and a best original screenplay Oscar nod; a so-so shot at best supporting actor SAG/Globe/Oscar nods for Irons and/or Spacey (although both are currently working overseas and therefore unable to do much glad-handing); and a long shot at a best picture Oscar nod. Roadside has already mailed screeners to the HFPA, with others for SAG and the Academy still to come; Quinto is doing SAG Q&As and will probably attend the Gothams, perhaps with Irons and other members of the cast; and the studio is starting to buy ads on various websites that might be read by awards voters. 5. Globes to Fete Freeman The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that actor Morgan Freeman will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 15. The 74-year-old, whose booming voice has been likened to God's, made his film debut in 1964. In the years since, he has given memorable performances in dozens of critically and/or commercially successful films. Freeman has received five Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe nominations, winning the best supporting actor Oscar for Million Dollar Baby (2004) and the best actor (musical or comedy) Globe for Driving Miss Daisy (1989). Previous recipients of the honor, which is determined by the HFPA's board of directors, include Alfred Hitchcock, Lucille Ball, Sidney Poitier, Sophia Loren, Sean Connery, Barbra Streisand, Martin Scorsese, and, at last year's ceremony, Robert De Niro. The Large Heart of Women (Il cuore grande delle ragazze)

A Medusa Film discharge of a Duea Film production in colaboration with Medusa Film, Sky Cinema. (Worldwide sales: Filmexport, Rome.) Created by Antonio Avati. Directed, compiled by Pupi Avati. With: Cesare Cremonini, Micaela Ramazzotti, Gianni Cavina, Andrea Roncato, Erica Blanc, Manuela Morabito, Gisella Sofio, Marcello Caroli, Sara Pastore, Massimo Bonetti, Sydne Rome, Rita Carlini, Stefania Barca, Isabelle Adriani. Narrator: Alessandro Haber.Just what does "The Large Heart of Women" contain for Pupi Avati? Remarkable ability to forgive males for cheating in it, obviously. On their own wedding evening. Yes, such large-hearted women can nonetheless be present in Avati's photos, by which outdated notions of women's devotion for their menfolk are here expressed via another nostalgia-heavy tale from the nineteen thirties, having a lummox whose sweet breath is catnip towards the ladies. Avati's aging fanbase will unquestionably put lower their coins, and television rotation is assured, but this will not travel beyond national edges. Alessandro Haber's question-filled voice-over recalls his childhood when brother Carlino (Cesare Cremonini) is guaranteed a motorbike if he'll get married among the village landowner's two ugly kids. Rather he falls for his or her attractive stepsister, Francesca (Micaela Ramazzotti, uninspired), who's bowled over through the scent of hawthorn flowers giving from his mouth (huh?). Conquering strenuous family objections, they got married, but promiscuous Carlino is brought down the wrong path by a classic flame (Isabelle Adriani). Avati spades on cutesy particulars rather than developing character, and also the women, aside from Francesca, are generally dried-out spinsters or whores. Andrew Bird: Fever Year

A Wegawam Music Co. production. Produced, directed by Xan Aranda. With: Andrew Bird, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Michael Lewis, Annie Clark, Martin Dosh.Xan Aranda's docu on unclassifiable singer-songwriter-composer Andrew Bird follows the indie artist around the difficult 165-stop concert tour. Reticent about his private existence, Bird eagerly discourses on his music, they readily confesses is his existence. Greater than other activities, Aranda's docu concerns process -- not just a linear one from genesis to performance, but open-ended, jazz-like experimentation where "final form" ought to be avoided. Generously sampling Bird's unique plans, utilizing their intellectual humor, folk tempos, complex structures, whimsical whizzing and signature pizzicato violin, "Fever" should rock the faithful and uninitiated alike. The docu opens and among Bird's intricate, multitrack solo performances, happens cluttered with audio switchers, wires and rotating horn sound system while he orchestrates recorded playbacks along with his foot, works round the violin or guitar, sings and whistles. Round the tour, these one-guy gigs alternate with ensemble dates featuring drummer Martin Dosh (another loner music artist whose introversion Bird identifies with), guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker and bassist Michael Lewis, Bird clearly finding equal satisfaction in interaction. In using the different stages of creation, Aranda takes her signal from her subject, trading minimal in time it studio, whose microphones Bird describes as "the worst possible audience." At his family's bucolic farm, however, which Bird has transformed in to a soaring, airy studio space, he composes, prerecords loops and rests up from tiring, if inspiring, tours. Sooner or later Aranda slips in grainy clips of earlier tours before Bird's music needed off(2007's "Armchair Apocrypha" offered greater than 100,000 copies), when he drove around in the van playing to "the identical 40 people" in cafes and bars. Though wider fame came worries of sameness and staleness. Bird's need to stay fresh keeps him constantly testing out tunes, welcoming glitches and defects, and writing nothing lower to make sure that she or he must constantly chase the ghost of his original concept. But this obsession, this deep nervous about rote repetition, also serves to stimulate, driving Bird to totally explore the choices as soon as. The docu title's "fever" reference proves literal, Bird suffering chills and flushes daily, leading to philosophical musings round the relationship of creativity to physical discrepancy. The tour finishes getting a tendon injuries that leaves him limping to the level. But what shapes the film might be the background music, delivering a wealthy continuum that very easily includes every facet of the expansion, the amounts usually running inside their whole, overlaid on subsequent shots despite the digital camera cuts. Technical credits stick out, the compositional and color balance in the image matching a topnotch appear mix.Camera (color, HD), Aaron Wickenden, Peter Gilbert, editors, Liz Kaar, Angelo Valencia music, Andrew Bird appear (DTS), Anne Hanson, Jennifer Brandel, Zach Goheen, Michael Slaboch. 'Anonymous' Star Rhys Ifans On Playing the man Behind Shakespeare's Works

Several areas of this week's era "Anonymous" are unforeseen. Within the questionable plot to Roland Emmerich staying away from large-budget action to see an account about Shakespeare, a variety of it will surprise audiences, but most likely probably the most interesting options created through the designers in the film was the actor inside the lead role, Rhys Ifans. Known in the usa for his smaller sized, oddball roles like Xenophilius Lovegood in "Harry Potter as well as the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" to ensure that as Curt Connors in "The Astounding Spider-Guy," Ifans may not appear like the natural fit for your role in the Earl of Oxford, then when the actor sitting lower with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, he discussed his find it hard to secure charge in "Anonymous." Ifans mentioned that step one was meeting director Roland Emmerich in your home london and reacting for an problem. The combined budget for 'Titanic,' 'Matrix Reloaded' and 'Ocean's 11' comes to almost half-billion dollars. REVIEW: The Three Musketeers is a Tedious, Incoherent Drag

If Sherlock Holmes could be successfully steampunked into a rakish action hero, there’s no reason The Three Musketeers couldn’t be gearpunked into some tolerable 17th century equivalent — and Athos, Porthos, Aramis and young D’Artagnan are actually soldiers, so no serious character tweaking is required to send them off into repeated swashbuckling setpieces. It’s not the addition of airships and male dangly earrings that make Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on Alexandre Dumas’ classic, much-adapted adventure such a drag, it’s everything else — the incoherence, the anvil-heavy dialogue, the lack of anything beyond the broadest of characterizations. Even the action sequences, which are Anderson’s primary selling point as a director, have a weightless, Wacky Races quality to them — no one who’s not an extra ever really seems in danger of getting hurt. The musketeers and their various enemies bounce through blimp battles, cannon fire and giant swordfights, and at worst their brocade outfits get a little dusty. With the stakes so low, why not just skip to the end, when there are guaranteed to be the most explosions and you’ll get to see who wins, before the inevitable sequel setup? This latest incarnation of The Three Musketeers has some promising casting: It’s always a pleasure to see Christoph Waltz, even in the silly role of the scheming Cardinal Richelieu. And Mads Mikkelsen shows up for a few scenes and a duel as Rochefort, the head of Richelieu’s guard and a man with an unfortunate tendency to stop to talk instead of just killing someone. Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans are all fine as Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and Orlando Bloom has some fun channeling Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow as the vampy, eviled-up Duke of Buckingham. Unfortunately, it’s Logan Lerman’s D’Artagnan and Milla Jovovich’s Milady de Winter who get the largest portions of screen time, and both are like nails on a chalkboard. Lerman, the teenage star of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, makes the introduction of Shia LaBeouf as Mutt Williams in the Indiana Jones saga look like a masterpiece of charm and charisma. His D’Artagnan is a smirky, preening brat who, thanks to how his introduction is compressed, seems to do nothing but challenge people to duels for the first half of the story. Jovovich, Anderson’s wife and muse, has proven herself capable of being a perfectly viable action heroine, but she’s at a loss here playing a character who’s been reworked from ruthless spy to double agent with no clear motivation other than wreaking havoc, and a soft spot for love that’s counter to Dumas’ branded woman’s tendency to use, discard and/or murder her lovers. It’s amusing that she’s given a swordfight scene in a full corseted gown with panniers, but it remains a ridiculous update of a formidable antagonist that turns her into a simpering dolly. Putting a weapon in the hand of a female character isn’t a guaranteed way of making the role stronger — Jovovich breaking into a highly guarded area in what appears to be her action lingerie shows her character to be capable, sure, but primarily there for decorative purposes. The Three Musketeers keeps the basic framework of Dumas’ story, with a few major tweaks. Most notably, the secret affair between Queen Anne (Juno Temple) and Buckingham, the exposure of which could trigger a war between France and England, has inexplicably been turned into a scheme concocted by Richelieu. In the film, Anne only has eyes for her awkward but adoring husband King Louis XIII (Freddie Fox), and her entanglement with the Duke is entirely the Cardinal’s invention. Presumably an infidelity storyline would not be PG-13 appropriate, though the arranged dynastic marriage of teenagers is totally fine. D’Artagnan’s love interest Constance (Gabriella Wilde) has similarly been sheared of her inconvenient husband and untimely end, and here is just a lady-in-waiting who D’Artagnan first tries, unsuccessfully, to woo while simultaneously fighting off dozens of swordsmen. The film leaps numbingly from action sequence to action sequence, none distinguished enough to leave a mark, even the addition of an introductory segment involving the musketeers breaking into Da Vinci’s vault, which is apparently hidden under a canal in Venice, in order to steal one of his plans. By the time a dirigible is impaled on Notre Dame’s spire, it may begin to occur to you that most of the goings-on in this film could probably have been averted by the royal couple just sitting down and having a conversation, especially if they really are the nice, in-love kids they’ve been made out to be. That would leave more time for Athos, Porthos and Aramis to drink, bitch about how time has passed them by and try on new jackets, which are the true highlights of this otherwise tedious affair. If D’Artagnan was sent out for takeout, that might keep him off screen until the credits — unless, that is, they somehow get a greenlight for a follow-up.

OK start for ABC's 'Man Up'

A special off-night edition of ''The X Factor'' kept Fox on top of Tuesday among young adults, while the CBS drama lineup prevailed in its target demo. ABC's Tim Allen comedy ''Last Man Standing'' had a good second-week showing, and the new show behind it, ''Man Up,'' did OK in its debut. According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, ''The X Factor'' averaged a 3.8 rating/10 share and 10.1 million viewers overall , down from its season average but better than both of its airings last week in a frame that was disrupted by baseball. Fox led its two-hour block in adults 18-49 and also topped the three-hour averages of ABC, CBS and NBC. The presence of ''X Factor'' had an effect on the reality shows opposite it, as both NBC's two-hour ''The Biggest Loser'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall) and ABC's 9 p.m. ''Dancing With the Stars'' results show (2.6/6 in 18-49, 13.5 million viewers overall) down week to week. At ABC, ''Last Man Standing'' (3.0/9 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) retained nearly 90% of its 18-49 score in the 8 o'clock half-hour last week and again provided nice time-period improvements, placing third in its half-hour among 18-49ers. It was followed by the debut of ''Man Up'' (2.4/6 in 18-49, 7.8 million viewers overall), which did OK though a network usually likes to see better retention for a new 8:30 half-hour due to rising television usage at that time; it was up slightly over ABC's performance at 8:30 on the same night a year ago. CBS, the night's leader in 25-54 and total viewers, ruled Tuesday's opening hour with ''NCIS'' (3.8/10 in 18-49, 19.0 million viewers overall), which tied ''X Factor'' as the night's No. 1 show in 18-49 while standing alone as the top draw in both adults 25-54 (4.7/10) and total viewers. While the original was down slightly week to week, 9 p.m. spinoff ''NCIS: Los Angeles'' held steady (3.3/8 in 18-49, 15.3 million viewers overall), placing second in 18-49, tying ''X Factor'' in 25-54 (4.7/10) and winning in total viewers. At 10 p.m., CBS rookie ''Unforgettable'' (2.5/6 in 18-49, 11.9 million viewers overall) showed its first week-to-week gains in 18-49 and got closer to the delivery of ''The Good Wife'' in the timeslot last year. It won the hour over NBC's ''Parenthood'' (2.0/5 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall), which matched last week's score, and ''Body of Proof'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall), which was also in line with its most recent episode. Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 3.8/10; CBS, 3.2/8; ABC, 2.4/6; NBC, 1.9/5; Univision, 1.5/4; CW, 0.8/2. In total viewers: CBS, 15.4 million; ABC, 10.7 million; Fox, 10.1 million; NBC, 5.1 million; Univision, 3.3 million; CW, 1.6 million. Contact Rick Kissell at rick.kissell@variety.com

Newcomers try to get 'Real' at B.O.

'Footloose''The Thing''The Big Year'Paramount's "Footloose" remake may not be able to dance away with the weekend's domestic B.O. crown despite positive word of mouth from advanced screenings. Holdover "Real Steel" and sci-fi horror prequel "The Thing" will also vie for the top spot. "Footloose," which launches today at 3,549 Stateside locations, is likely to bow at around $15 million, according to pre-weekend tracking services. That doesn't leave much wiggle room for the dance pic, since DreamWorks' "Real Steel" is likely to drop some 45%-50% in its second outing, which would put it with- in hailing distance of "Footloose.""Footloose." Universal's "The Thing" prequel is in the mix as well, though the studio has slightly more modest expectations for an opening in the low double-digits. Twentieth Century Fox's adult-skewed bird-watching comedy "The Big Year" will struggle to take flight, B.O. observers say, with dismal prospects in the $3 million-$5 million range. Overseas, "Real Steel" should hold on to its No. 1 position, expanding to markets like South Korea and the U.K. Last weekend, the film bowed with $22.6 million, more than enough to knock "The Smurfs" from its eight-week roost atop the international box office. Domestically, the weekend will take a sizable hit vs. last year, when "Jackass 3D" scored the highest opening ever in October with $50 million. That's considered a B.O. anomaly, so most bizzers are focusing on last weekend as a better comparison. In an effort to build word of mouth (and boosted by enthusiastic test screenings), Par hosted free nationwide sneaks of "Footloose" on Sept. 30, as well as screenings for cheerleading camps and youth groups. Par said the advanced screenings were effective in reinforcing interest among the pic's core demos, mainly teenage girls and women between 30 and 40. But there hasn't been much movement among male auds, meaning "Footloose" still is primarily a dual-quadrant pic. The original "Footloose" became a B.O. sensation in 1984, cuming almost $80 million -- nearly 10 times its opening-weekend gross. Par's remake cost a modest $24 million, with OK overseas prospects to keep the mood light. The film bowed day-and-date with $1.2 million from Australia and New Zealand. Pic expands this weekend to an additional five markets, including the U.K., with major territories such as France, Brazil and Russia set to follow over the next few months. Universal is distribbing "The Thing" overseas for Morgan Creek, which had international rights to the film. "The Thing" -- a prequel to John Carpenter's original 1982 film -- launches this weekend in Oz, France and Taiwan. Domestically, there's a lot riding on the film's opening perf, especially since Par launches "Paranormal Activity 3" next weekend. It's not certain whether auds will embrace both pics in the weeks leading up to Halloween. The holiday itself typically isn't a big moviegoing weekend, though Halloween this year falls on a Monday. For comparison purposes, Universal points to Screen Gems' "The Stepfather," which bowed this same weekend in 2009 with $11.6 million and cumed only $29.1 million domestically. Fox's "The Big Year," budgeted at a reported $28 million, could be a tough sell for the studio: The film follows three avid bird-watchers who compete to spot the rarest birds in North America. Stars Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin will attract some filmgoers, though the primarily adult aud could be deterred by tepid reviews. In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics bows Pedro Almodovar's "The Skin I Live In" at six locations in NY and L.A. Also this weekend, Millennium Films' Nicole Kidman-Nicolas Cage thriller "Trespass" launches at 10 Stateside engagements, while Anchor Bay's "Texas Killing Fields," starring Sam Worthington and Jessica Chastain, opens at three. "There's lots of negativity for the reason that court docket," stated Ronnie Lee, a 32-year-old trucker from Pembroke, Wales, sporting a "Thriller" T-shirt. "This can be a opportunity to say, 'Thank you Michael' and celebrate the background music.Inch Fans across Europe collected outdoors the stadium, where suppliers did a brisk trade in King of Pop T-t shirts and hats like individuals once worn by Jackson. "No matter what for the reason that court, we'll never get Michael back," stated Karin Kiewiet, 40, a municipality worker from Emmen, Netherlands. "This is an excellent chance for all of us to start grieving." The show has experienced teething problems, with producers battling to set up top-title functions for that tribute, located by actor Jamie Foxx and British TV host Fearne Cotton. The Black Eyed Peas drawn from the selection now, stating "inevitable conditions" among reviews the chart-topping band is separating. Organizer Chris Search stated that regardless of the last-minute loss, fans could expect "a really, very spectacular show." "Everything we've done continues to be governed by one qualifying criterion -- would Michael did it by doing this, would he approve, would he enjoy it?Inch stated Search, leader of worldwide Live Occasions. "We're trying to behave worth among the finest showmen of contemporary occasions." Several fan groups all over the world have belittled the big event, not only because of its timing, however for ticket prices that began at about $100 as well as for what some regard being an out-of-the-way location in Cardiff, 150 miles (240 kilometers) west based in london. Coordinators also annoyed many fans by inviting the rock-band Hug, whose bassist Gene Simmons told the sunday paper this past year that there is "without doubt i believeInch that Jackson, who had been found innocent of molestation charges in 2005, had mistreated children. The invitation was hastily rescinded, however, many fans continued to be angry. "The fans aren't happy the Jackson estate isn't involved," stated Wesley Noorhoff, leader of the Nederlander Michael Jackson fan club. "It appeared like they desired to develop a concert soon, to obtain money. In my opinion it will wait, not just due to the Murray trial. Should you perform a tribute to Michael, it needs to be the greatest there's, much like Michael." Search was adamant the show will be a success. He stated a lot more than 40,000 tickets have been offered by Friday, and that he was confident of reaching the venue's 50,000 capacity. I Am a Good Person/I Am a Bad Person

A Punk Films presentation. Produced, directed, written by Ingrid Veninger. With: Ingrid Veninger, Hallie Switzer, Simon Reynolds.Taking the "personal film" to an extreme, Canadian auteur Ingrid Veninger's "I Am a Good Person/I Am a Bad Person" is so sketchily drawn and obscure, it may be only the helmer herself who knows exactly what's up, leaving even sympathetic observers out in the emotional cold. Veninger's microbudget third feature will have difficulty mustering even minimal returns, given its anemic narrative and offhanded regard for its audience. Acclaimed for her second feature, "Modra," Veninger used the European tour of that film as a backdrop for this follow-up, in which a filmmaker named Ruby White (Veninger) brings her unsuccessful movie before unresponsive festival audiences, painfully discovering what it was that drove her to make the movie in the first place. A brittle and alienating personality (which doesn't make the film any more appealing), Ruby eventually drives her pregnant 18-year-old daughter, Sara (Veninger's daughter, Halle Switzer), to split with her in Berlin. Sara continues on to Paris to figure out what to do about her baby. The outcome is predictable, the process too spare to earn much affection.Camera (color, HD), Benjamin Lichty; editor, Chris Wiseman; costume designer, Hallie Switzer. The Voice (and Former TRL) Host Carson Daly: The Founding Father of Social TV?

Laugh if you'd like, but Carson Daly may have started the social TV movement means by 1998 with MTV's interactive call-in countdown show Total Request Live. Today, he hosts NBC's very social singing competition The Voice. (Between, he's situated NBC's late-late-evening show Last Call with Carson Daly.) TRL as well as the Voice can experience miles apart round the music-show spectrum, however they have both brought for the socialization of TV. We spoken to Daly about his role in shaping TRL, adapting the Nederlander formula for your Voice as well as the role of quality in social success. Fall Preview: Get scoop inside your favorite returning shows TVGuide.com: Did TRL invent social TV? Carson Daly: I really think so. It absolutely was possibly the first instance of that which you now consider social or interactive television - in the event you asked for someone for the next example, In my opinion they'd be hard-pressed to find one. In 1997, 1998, producers and systems made television and you also a slave to and just you loved it otherwise you didn't. There's no communication. There's that which you known as the "fourth wall" - you will not ever arrived at play in the procedure. At MTV, we seriously considered awesome, and then we made a decision to state, "We wish you to definitely certainly play in the procedure. Here is your network. Here is your space." TVGuide.com: However, if the show started, it was not interactive whatsoever. Daly: Once I arrived at MTV, i had been trying to build up a concept for your show because Total Request wasn't really working. It absolutely was a show where I used to be alone throughout the evening, in the studio, reading through via a high 10. It absolutely was kind of an emergency. In those days, everybody was approaching in my opinion all the time and would say "Hey, MTV!" -- they'd call me MTV -- "Guy, that video sucks. Why don't you play more Korn?" I obtained so frustrated with hearing that, therefore i came back for the network and mentioned, "Let's function one hour and say, 'Here's our phone number. Here's this new factor known as the digital email address contact information. We will offer you remedies for everything we play, which way if you don't appreciate it - then blame yourself and blame your pals. Because everybody have sh---y taste.'" This is when it started. That was one of the primary occasions we view, in entertainment, relating to this pop-culture scale, social media in the office. Have a look whatsoever from the familiar faces returning to TV this year TVGuide.com: So quick-forward 14 years, and you're simply hosting The Voice - possibly most likely probably the most social shows round the air. Can it be whatsoever like the beginning at TRL? Daly: It's! I really appear such as the Voice's core audience is Generation TRL. There's a interesting correlation of those two. It's almost the adult version of TRL. TVGuide.com: The Voice introduced new elements, like integrating on-screen hashtags, the Social Media Room, a tweet scroll in the finish in the screen, getting a chance to tweet within the idol idol judges. Which kind of team was behind putting my way through position? Daly: In justness, the particular fact is it had been a format that was already used in Holland. The Nederlander version in the Voice really recognized the whole social aspect. Several days in advance, we'd a crew of people which determined the best way to tell others, how you would start letting people participate the understanding online. We start each episode by saying, "Thank you for going to The Voice, most likely probably the most socially and digitally integrated show on television. In . If you're gonna condition that line, you have to support it. TVGuide.com: Simply how much you think the social aspect carried out in to the wealth from the show? Daly: Once the product's bad, it might have observed that same digital imprint, nevertheless it may have been negative. Due to the fact people are interacting and you're simply trending on Twitter, that doesn't imply you'll probably be large. The VMAs had their utmost amounts in 10 years, however, many people online were kinda like, "This show sucks." It absolutely was a greater school train wreck. We appear such as the Voice is a superb show, so when the item is really good, people will believe it is and discuss it. And so they did. I furthermore think one reason this show is actually effective is really because we go very seriously - we're not Idol, we're not The Gong Show. We don't think there's anything funny of a youthful person trying to really make it inside the music business. Gallery: Which Tv shows hopped the shark last season? TVGuide.com: You think that is all merely a trend or perhaps is there endurance? Daly: In my opinion it is the obvious method of the long run. In my opinion the general public will start to dictate plots. There might be also alternate being to films or Tv shows eventually. Social networks are excellent if something is great, people will watch it, after which it they'll tell others virally. This happened when Mad Males first started on AMC. Now it doesn't even matter that you land or what network you are well on, if people as if you, the word could possibly get around. In television now, using social networks are vital to success.

Revenge

Filmed in North Carolina by ABC Studios. Executive producers, Mike Kelley, Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Phillip Noyce; producers, Randy Sutter, Samantha Thomas; director, Noyce; writer, Kelley.Emily Thorne - Emily VanCamp Victoria Grayson - Madeleine Stowe Conrad Grayson - Henry Czerny Daniel Grayson - Josh Bowman Jack Porter - Nick Wechsler Nolan Ross - Gabriel Mann Ashley Davenport - Ashley Madekwe Charlotte Grayson - Christa B. Allen Declan Porter - Connor Paolo The money, power and privilege associated with the Hamptons is a ripe setting for a nighttime soap, and a young woman bent on revenge against those responsible for her father's disgrace and death when she was a child is as good a place to start as any. Yet "Revenge" doesn't quite pop, even with an opening murder to set the wheels in motion. Although the show incorporates the symbol for infinity, in terms of timelines, earning a full season order provides a more pressing concern. Part of the problem has to do with Emily VanCamp ("Brothers & Sisters"), who is simply a little too sweet and apple-pie as Emily Thorne, the alluring young woman who takes up residence among the ostentatiously wealthy set, with an eye on exacting you-know-what. After seeking to hook viewers with the murkily shot slaying on a moonlit beach, the series jumps back "five months earlier," as Emily quickly wangles an invite to a lavish bash thrown by Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe), described as the "reigning queen of the Hamptons." Pretty soon, though, that crown begins to rest uneasily, as Emily sets about her elaborate plot against the local gentry, which includes using Victoria's son (Josh Bowman) -- who immediately takes the bait by setting his sights on Emily -- against the family. The first hour (shot in North Carolina, with series production shifting west to Manhattan Beach, Calif.) features philandering husbands and catty snubs, auguring the "Dallas"-like doings to come. Ultimately, though, those elements will have to take on a life of their own, since Emily gaining satisfaction against all the key players will have to be deferred to give the title any meaning or suspense. "Revenge" teases out its story by flashing back in two ways -- not just from where the pilot begins, but also by Emily recalling how each of her targets played a role in the elaborate, high-finance scheme that framed her dad. Judging a series such as this by the pilot and a second episode is tantamount to reviewing a book based on the prologue, but the show mirrors many a Hamptons resident by being too thin for its own good. Stowe (who in an odd footnote co-starred in "Revenge," the 1990 Kevin Costner pic) is the obvious standout as the brittle, ruthless bitch who dominates her status-conscious social circle, but there's not much yet to distinguish Victoria from any number of divas past and present. That leaves VanCamp, whose innocence might disarm her prey but also doesn't establish her as a Machiavellian schemer with the grit or resources to bring the whole stinking (if beautifully decorated) house of cards toppling down. Series creator Mike Kelley did create a compelling soap in CBS' short-lived "Swingtown," and Phillip Noyce directed the pilot. Their resumes, however, bode better for "Revenge" than the timeslot, an hour where ABC has struggled launching new shows. Because even if there are traces of "Desperate Housewives" in "Revenge's" DNA, ABC's latest serial feels oh-so-last decade, which, particularly in the Hamptons, is about as thematically stylish as wearing white after Labor Day.Camera, Chris Manley; production designer, Devorah Herbert; editor, Martin Nicholson; music, Izler; casting, Elizabeth Barnes, Corbin Bronson. 60 MIN. So, How Much Money Will 'Drive' Make, Anyway?

'Straw Dogs' isn't the only wide release hiding some potential audience-alienating elements in its marketing campaign. Out Friday, 'Drive' has been positioned as a revenge tale-cum-love story, with handsome Ryan Gosling and perky Carey Mulligan trying to make it in Los Angeles' seedy underbelly. Sounds great! And it mostly is -- provided you can stand the sight of someone getting their head blown off. (Literally.) 'Drive' might not be the most violent wide release of the year based on sheer body count -- 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' is arguably more violent since that film basically kills every citizen of Chicago -- but the carnage in Nicolas Winding Refn's art-house thriller is brutal, sloppy, squishy and shocking. Which is exactly what Refn had in mind. As he told Moviefone last week, "The first half is very champagne. Very much the purity of love. When it goes to the dark side, it becomes very extreme and violent." And how! Which raises the question: just what will audiences think? Box office figures during opening weekend are invariably the result of marketing campaigns, and the 'Drive' campaign has been a mixed bag. The posters -- built around out-of-context stills from the film -- are coolness cat-nip to those 'Drive'-heads who have already seen the film through press screenings, festivals and the like, but they don't really say much to potential ticket buyers. (Though the cheeky pink-script font certainly may recall 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City' for some.) The trailers are better, showcasing the romance, stakes and conflict. As the Yahoo! Projector blog points out, 'Drive' had an unavoidable presence during NFL opening weekend -- prime placement for a film looking to grab male viewers by the handful. Which, seemingly, is the audience FilmDistrict is gunning for. That's what makes 'Drive' an interesting box-office case. It's not an indie release hitting a handful of theaters in NY and Los Angeles with an expanded roll-out to follow: 'Drive' is on 2,886 screens this weekend, more than fellow new releases 'Straw Dogs' and 'I Don't Know How She Does It.' The film is certainly the best of that bunch -- its Rotten Tomatoes rating almost doubles 'Dogs' and 'Does It' combined -- and the studio is likely hoping massive advance word-of-mouth, critical love and the comet-like star-power of Ryan Gosling will help 'Drive' top its new-release competition. Will it work? Per BoxOffice.com, mostly. 'Drive' is tracking to earn around $12.7 million this weekend, good enough for third place behind the re-issue of 'The Lion King 3D' and weekend two of 'Contagion.' If that happens, FilmDistrict, Refn and movie lovers who demand more from the usual Hollywood product will breathe a sigh of relief. How 'Drive' does beyond that, however -- when word-of-mouth about its violence, as well as its art-house leanings, begins to spread -- is still a question mark. For some, that might make 'Drive' more of a destination; for others, it'll be a huge turn-off. Not that Refn is worried either way. When Moviefone asked him about the pervasive images in 'Drive,' he responded like a man comfortable with his own film. "The better the drama, the better the entertainment." Hopefully audiences agree.
